Senator Godswill Akpabio, a two term governor of Akwa Ibom state and current senator representing Ikot Ekpene senatorial district has been hailed by his admirers as a visionary leader, who brought good governance to bare on his people.
Despite the many accolades he has received both within and outside Akwa Ibom, available facts suggests that as governor of Akwa Ibom state, Godswill under performed in almost all ramifications considering the heavy allocation the state received within his tenure.
Leaving a huge debt profile behind for his successor, Udom Emmanuel, the other constant thing about the Akpabio government is the number of uncompleted projects he left behind. It’s safe to say that Akpabio as governor didn’t complete any of his key infrastructural project.
The hotel in Ikot Ekpene, the 20 anniversary hospital, the Godswill Akpabio stadium, Ikot Ekpene – Uyo road and the Tropicana entertainment center amongst others are indicators that perhaps the administration was more focused with sharing money on the road to well wishers than with completing life changing projects, that would have provided jobs for the numerous hangers-on.
The Ibom tropicana entertainment center after gulping over 120 billion Naira can only be compared to Rotimi Amaechi’s monorail in the standing order of failed projects. With the vast area of land taken over by rodents and weeds, it’s clear that the project served as a conduit pipe for embezzlement of funds.
His outright defeat at the polls to a former deputy governor of the state(who had long lost political relevance) was a referendum on Akpabio’s performance, suffice it to say that Akpabio lost terribly in first competitive election he stood against a formidable opponent – he lost woefully.
While the state will continue to suffer for monies misappropriated and debts incurred between 2007 – 2015, it’s yet to be seen what will be done about projects like the Ibom tropicana by the present government and subsequent ones.
Whenever the history of Akwa Ibom state will be written, it will be said that there was once a government that got so much money, spent so much money and yet left behind a legacy of uncompleted projects – that government was headed by Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio.
