Nigeria’s Supreme Court has nullified the election of Bayelsa State governor-elect, David Lyon and his running mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, who were to be sworn into office tomorrow.
A five-man panel of the apex court led by Justice Mary Odili ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to the APC candidates as the winners of the November 16 election and issue fresh certificates of return to the candidates of the party with the next highest votes(being the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidates).
Reading the lead judgment, Justice Ejembi Ekwo, gave the orders after disqualifying the APC’s deputy governorship candidate in the election, Degi-Eremienyo.
The court ruled Degi-Eremienyo’s disqualification invalidates the joint ticket with which he held with the governorship candidate, David Lyon, with which they won the November 16, 2019 election. Degi-Eremienyo was disqualified for submitting forged certificates to INEC.
