The National Working Committee(NWC) of the All Progressive Congress(APC) has unanimously agreed to proceed with direct primaries in choosing its governorship candidate for the forthcoming election in Edo state.
Party Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomole has insisted on having the primaries follow the direct format instead of the indirect format(which favour sitting governors), a move seen by loyalists of incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki as unfavourable to their boss.
The governor and his predecessor have been at loggerhead over control of the party structure in the state. Political watchers say the animosity between the two is as a result of the former governor’s domineering attitude and wanting to run Obaseki’s government from his Abuja home.
It is still unclear if Mr Obaseki will dump the party at this time or will still go ahead to give the direct primaries a shot as former governor of Lagos state, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode unsuccessfully did.
