Renewed violence and cult clashes in Rivers state is causing panic within residents of various communities in the oil rich state.
Killings and reprisal attacks by various cults groups in the state had seen a decline within the electioneering period, with the recent upsurge returning the state to its dark days once again.
Last week a burnt corpse suspected to be that of a murdered cultist killed by a rival group was seen around the Alakahia axis of the East West road.
Over the weekend, about 11 people were killed in Emouha local government area by rivals from another cult group. The police spokesman in Rivers state, Nnamdi Omoni while briefing newsmen hinted that the Rivers state police command has made no fewer than 10 arrests over the incidence.
On killings within Bade community in Khana local government area, the command’s spokesperson accused members of the families of victims of cult killings of refusing to inform the police and hiding the bodies of their relatives. Traditional rulers and politicians have also been accused of sponsoring these various cult for political and chieftaincy struggles and failing to retrieve these arms afterwards.
In Rumuokparali community of Obio Akpor local government area, resident were seen relocating to relatively safer areas within the state for fear of harassment by the various cults groups engaged in supremacy battle in the area, these has affect businesses and economics lives within the community.
In Agbonchia, Eleme local government area, the community is gradually becoming deserted as many residents have moved out forcing landlords to reduce their rents.
Residents of the state are calling on governments at all levels to wake up to their responsibilities in ensuring innocent citizens are protected from these cultist and the perpetrators of violence under any guise are made to face the law.
